We are going to do a cover of JoJo - Keep Forgetting (To Forget About You). This is a song sung by a famous singer but it has not yet got a video to go with the song, so we are going to create our own video to go with the song.

What we will do is we will match what is happening in the video to the lyrics. For example for this verse:
'And everytime I drive by your apartment
I get this overwhelming urge to walk in' - We could video record a car driving by or we could video record someone walking up to a house looking as if they had the urge to walk in. We will try to do this for most of the lyrics. We will also edit in some text and make it appear on the screen. For example the word 'Forgetting' could appear on the screen when it is being sung. Also our video will be in black and white.

There are three types of music video:

• Narrative
• Conceptual
• Performance

- Why do institutions make music videos?.

- What are they trying to achieve?.

- How might artists be regarded within the music industry? As a celebrity? As a brand? As a unique creative artist? Or what?.

Andrew Goodwin writing in 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' (Routledge 1992)

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in rock video, dance routine).

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

• Dancers - usually female.
• Singers - sometimes you can see the background singers in the video.
• Images to do with the lyrics - sometimes images appear in the video to do with the lyrics of the song.
• Text - sometimes the lyrics themselves appear in the video.
• Lighting.
• The singer themselves.
• The video always reflects the theme and story of the song.
• The performer usually lip syncs some or all of the lyrics of the song.
• The video is used to promote the song.
• The style of the video depends on the genre of the song as it has to appeal to the target audience.
